Day 2 Walking With The Lord
Genesis 5:21-24
When Enoch was 65 years old, he became the father of Methuselah. After the birth of Methuselah, Enoch lived in close fellowship with God for another 300 years, and he had other sons and daughters. Enoch lived 365 years, walking in close fellowship with God. Then one day he disappeared, because God took him.
I think that one of the more powerful reflections you and I can have when we get to December this year, is to look back across the year and see that it was a time where we ‘walked in close fellowship with God.’
My wife and I enjoy walking together each day. We make sure it's a longer walk, which is good for exercise, but more importantly, we value the time for talking and being together. We speak about our family, our future hopes, and, of course, things that are pressing and require our immediate focus. It's quality time together!
Intimacy, by definition, is ‘closeness.’
- A healthy and happy marriage is one that enjoys close intimacy.
- Rewarding and valuable friendships are those that are established on the shared enjoyment of being together.
- A parent/child relationship is strengthened when time and close attention is given to each other.
All these things are true also of our faith in God! James 4:8 reminds us that as we draw near to God, he draws near to us. Hebrews 11 tells us, again regarding Enoch, that this 'walk with God' was one in which God was pleased: "…and without faith, it is impossible to please God" (Hebrews 11:6).
I've been guilty on many occasions of overthinking and overcomplicating my relationship with God. Lots of 'doing' and 'striving' and plenty of 'oomph', but perhaps today we can all be reminded that there is a beautiful intimacy we can enjoy with the Lord, simply by 'walking in close fellowship with God.'
· A vibrant and daily prayer life.
· A quiet confidence, a daily trust that God will lead you through the big and the small matters of life.
· A daily ‘walk’ with the Lord: matters of the heart, mind, and our actions that please God, because they are expressions of our faith in him!
Family discussion questions
1. What does ‘walking in close fellowship with God’ mean and look like to you?
2. Let's set a goal together that 2026 will be a year of greater intimacy (closeness) with the Lord. How will you measure that? Prayer goals? Personal growth in the Word? Something else?
