Day 10 – Sitting At The Feet of Jesus

Luke 10:39

Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught.

One of the biggest questions many Christians have is 'How do I hear from God?' When I think about this question, I am reminded of the passage in Luke 10:38-42 where Jesus visits the house of the sisters, Mary and Martha. In this passage, it mentions how Martha had welcomed Jesus into her home but was distracted by the dinner that she was preparing. In contrast, Mary was sitting at Jesus' feet, listening to what He taught. Martha was getting frustrated because she felt that she was doing all the work while Mary wasn't doing anything. Jesus' response to Martha has always stood out to me:

But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42)

I believe this passage shows what our lives can be like – we have invited Jesus in, but then we get so distracted by things that need to get done that it takes away from our focus on the most essential thing – sitting at the feet of Jesus and listening to Him speak. So often, as humans, we get caught up in the busyness of life, whether it is work, family, or even serving in church, and we allow these blessings to become a distraction from being in communion with Jesus.

So, to answer the question of 'How do I hear from God?' I genuinely believe that to hear from God, we need to set aside time from our busy schedules and routines to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to what He wants to say to us. The Bible says that "The word of God is alive and active" (Hebrews 12:2). God is always speaking to us through the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. Still, the question that I would challenge you to ask yourself is, 'Am I creating space in my daily life, away from distractions, to sit in the quiet with Jesus and hear Him speak?'

Family discussion questions

1.     What does spending time with God look like to you?

2.     How can you be intentional about creating space with God that is undistracted this week?

3.     End your devotion time by listening to worship music. A great song is 'Sitting at the Feet of Jesus' by Youth Alive.
